I think it's funny when I tell people I'm going to the cemetery. The looks I get are pretty quizzical, but I just feel bad for them because they have obviously never been to the historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta. Famous people like Bobby Jones (golf god), Margaret Mitchell (Gone with the Wind), and Maynard Jackson (Hartsfield Jackson International Airport) are buried there. It is home to many fallen Confederate soldiers and one of the only places where Union soldiers are buried along side CSA soldiers. The cemetery was founded in the 1850's and the dramatic Victorian headstones have been photographed often. The dogwoods were in full bloom this weekend and the weather was gorgeous. I couldn't pass up the chance to wander around and take some pictures. I highly recommend a visit if you're in Atlanta (and follow up your visit with the blackened shrimp tacos at Six Feet Under).
